EU’s Services Trade Deficit Increases

The 15-member European Union services trade deficit reached € 3.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2000 according to data released by Eurostat 30 april, 2001. This is figure is down from the € 1.9 billion surplus registered in the third quarter of 2000. The trade deficit for the Eurozone comprising Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland was € 6.7 billlion, up from the €2.5 billion deficit recorded in the third quarter of 2000. In turn, the current account deficit of the European Union-15 rose to €15 billion in the fourth quarter of last year from 8.6 billion euros in the previous quarter.
