Volume of retail trade up by 0.1% in euro-zone

In April 2002, as compared to April 2001, the volume of retail trade1 increased by 0.1% in the euro-zone (excluding Britain, Denmark and Sweden) and by 1.4% in the EU15 countries according to Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg, Compared to March 2002, sales fell by 0.6% in the euro-zone and by 0.1% in the EU15.

In April 2002, as compared to April 2001, retail trade of "food, drinks and tobacco" rose by 0.4% in the euro-zone and by 1.0% in the EU15. The sales of food in specialised stores fell by 3.9% in the euro-zone and 3.1% in the EU15, while sales in non specialised stores increased by 1.7% and 2.3% respectively. The non food sector decreased by 0.5% in the euro-zone but gained 1.6% in the EU15. Among the non food sectors, "textiles, clothing and footwear" grew by 0.7% in the euro-zone and a strong 4.9% in the EU15. Retail sales of "household goods" fell by 2.9% in the euro-zone and by 1.6% in the EU15.

On a monthly basis, "food, drinks and tobacco" decreased by 0.6% in the euro-zone in April with respect to March. Similarly, food, drinks and tobacco fell by 0.2% in the EU15 in April. The "non food" aggregate contracted by 0.4% in the euro-zone and remained stable (0.0%) in the EU15. Among the non food sectors, "textiles, clothing and footwear" fell by 0.2% in the euro-zone but rose by 0.6% in the EU15. The index for "household goods" decreased in both areas: by 0.2% in the euro-zone and by 0.3% in the EU15.
