  • Canadian professional and business services that encompass computer services, architectural and engineering services, advertising, design, and other professional services grew at an annual 10% average in 1999 and 2000. This fast growth has fuelled much of the outstanding performance of Canadian services industries for much of the 1990s (Graph 1).

From the 4th quarter of 1998 to the third quarter of 2000, Canadian business services created almost 100,000 new jobs after employment grew at annual 4% average in the same period. That services industries create many new jobs is no news in Canada or elsewhere, but a 5% average increase in wages in Canadian business services is certainly news when the average inflation rate in the same period was 1.8%.
